AN UNUSUAL YET NATURAL START TO FALLING IN LOVE WITH MUSIC

Ayush Lala, a young talented Santoor player from Kolkata, India, was born on 20th August 2004. Born to musically oriented parents, Ayush would often accompany his father to watch several Indian classical music concerts in Kolkata. Ayush has grown his interest in Santoor from the very childhood period when he used to visit many night-long classical music concerts in Kolkata, with his father. In one such overnight concert, Ayush fell asleep in the midst of the audiences at about 3 AM, but a sudden jhankaar (rhythmic sound) of an instrument jerked Ayush and awakened him from  sleep and  he was astonished and mesmerized to hear the sweet sound of the instrument being played. Ayush immediately asked his father about the name of the instrument and name of the artist who was playing it at the time. He came to know that it was called Santoor (Shatatantri Veena) and the Santoor player was none other than his present Guruji, Pandit Tarun Bhattacharya. Bewitched and bemused, Ayush then listened to the complete recital from beginning to end with rapt attention and he, then and there, decided to learn and play the musical instrument with great enthusiasm. His father took him to Pandit Tarun Bhattacharya, and Ayush began his training with one of the senior disciples Shri Chiradip Sarkar.

THE YOUNGEST SANTOOR PLAYER FROM INDIA & THE GRACE OF GURU

Ayush is an Indian classical musician of the Maihar Gharana, is a promising and rising artist who has started his music career at the age of 9 under the guidance of  his first Guru Shri Chiradip Sarkar. Ayush has touched the hearts of many music lovers by his style of playing Santoor, which  is also known as  Shatatantri Veena (a hundred-stringed instrument). He has excelled as a matured artist with keen skill of playing Santoor under the guidance, love and care of his respected Guru Pandit Tarun Bhattarcharya, who currently trains him.

Ayush believes in executing hard and strenuous diligence in learning and practising music keeping pace with his studies at the same time. He is currently pursuing B. Tech degree in Computer Science engineering. At this young age Ayush has receive affection and accolades  from his audiences for his melodious music performances in many stages across India. Ayush is a CCRT Scholar (junior) under Ministry of Culture, Govt of India. He has also bagged the “Best Instrumentalist Award” 2020 in  Bharat Sanskriti Utsav. He has also been emerged as Champion for the Stars of Tomorrow – Instrumental competition 2021.

PROFESSIONAL ORIENTATION AND CREDIBLE RECOGNITION

Ayush has performed in many prestigious Stages like ICCR Hall Kolkata, Bhabanipur Sangeet Sammilani, Bholagiri Kala Mandir,Howrah, Uttarpara Sangeet Chakra etc. He has also performed on so many social media platforms like “MyGov” under the Government of India, appeared on interview with performance in TALENT HUNT programme in USA telecast on MANA T.V.2020., appeared on interview with performance in SARB AKAL T.V. telecast from Canada, 2023. He is an acclaimed artiste beyond the city, namely Benaras where he performed in the famous platform Subha-e-Benaras in the year 2018.

Moving forward with his passion for Santoor, Ayush aspires to go ahead to reach the pinnacle of his performing arts journey with the blessings of every well wishers and his Gurus. In our first phone call with Ayush, he has demonstrated a calm-minded approach in the way he talks and a respectful tone of voice; his sincerity reflects in the manner he keeps his promises that he makes verbally, or in writing. A true musician is not just about honing skills in music, but also in being a good human being of integrity, self-respect and love for the community.
